The Tampa SHOW WAS A GREAT SUCCESS ! :
Friday the 13th, and Saturday the 14th of April, Tampa's new hope for an arts community,
The Ybor Cigar Theater, presented a collection of art and performances by dozens
of Florida Artists for Peace across many disciplines, all creating 'Art Against Fear'.

The Tampa Tribune hailed "David Karave ... is a rising star in the Art World"

David Karave presented a live performance of a family of robotic crash test dummies
that violently and musically self-destruct in reaction to the disintegrating color code
threat alerts on their projected home TV. The robotic family moves into symphonies of
musical anxiety, as they resort to rhythmically destroying themselves.

Also in the show, curated by David Karave ... Beth Elkin presented 'Homeland Buffoonery',
workshops and performances of protest with fellow clown Derek Baxter, under a new form of
activism : clowning and calling for peace while costumed in army and clown gear.
The great pianist Alex Gendron brought us his paranoid futuristic keyboard
rhapsodies first in collaboration with David Karave, and then once again in a
solo performance.

N.O. Bonzo gave us a showcase of her color drenched apocalyptic
neopsychedelic paintings.

Also, presenting at the show were Rachel Bishop's 'Silent Burning', a performance
of video projection and spoken word on themes of censorship, Erik Zimmerman's
deranged wooden robots, Mark Runge's beautiful and astounding collages on fear
and innocence, and Desiree D'Alessandro's installations/sculptures of pharmaceutical
artifact liberation. As well, we will have Angela Dickerson's paintings of color colliding
peace bearing trees, Digital 3D artist Anthony Cartagena's portraits of his inhuman army,
and Samuel A. Warmack's minimalist ghostlike worlds of children, loss, and light.
Adrienne Nadeau, Jeff Brian Land and the Cigar Theater Spoken Word Crew will perform
spoken word poetry against fear. Painter Mary Martinez presented a child's call for peace,
amongst many other artists including two massive stories of open studios, showcasing
the Cigar Theater's many ongoing artworks.

Experience crash art.

Here you will find a video, pictures and a biography for the cinematic-self-destructing-robotic-art works of David Karave.

I am now exploring collaborations with musicans, artists and activists in any venue. I am also looking into the possible creation of a touring festival of art and music in '08 called THE ART AGAINST FEAR FESTIVAL' If you feel that you create art against fear, and you would like to join the festival, please contact me- musicians, artists and activists.

About the art work 'Home Automation' : In a walk-in installation, a robotic crash test dummy family reacts in violent musical seizures, to the color code threat alerts they experience on their home TV. As the color code threats rise, the self destructing anxiety of the robotic family cascades into a crashing, musical, cinematic, robotic cacophany.

The idea for a robotic cinema ... In 2003, after a year of searching, Karave received a loan of a crash test dummy from the US de-fense department. Karave used the dummy as a prototype to eventually create a robotic installation- the final result - a crash test dummy family that violently reacts in musical seizures, to the color code threat alerts they experience on their home TV. The art project called 'Home Automation' was born.

In Home Automation, the robotic family's own self destruction becomes musical, rhythmic metal. The sound of desperate robots, and the paradoxically beautiful music that the family creates, is a testament to the intense, multi-layered nature of this controversial art work. It is as if the robotic family's dying spirits break away from their bodies as music.

About David Karave :

David Karave was born in 1977 in Providence, RI. He studied theatre during his undergaduate years at Bennington College, VT and the BADA Acting Conservatory, London, England. In 2000 he partnered with Spooky World Haunted Amusement Parks where he began to combine theatre with animatronics, sound and robotic art. Karave was a part of the team that designed the robotic scares at the massive Spooky World Haunt-Amusement park. Karave went on to receive his master's degree in Fine arts(Robotic Art and Cinema) from Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec. In Montreal Karave collaborated with many great artists including Christopher Payne, Josh Dow, Chan Wan Wee, and Denis Petrushin.

Following a very succesful first show at the renowned 'Society for Art and Technology gallery', production in Montreal, 'Home Automation' continued on, received by audiences in Rhode Island, New York and Baltimore. In September and October 2006 the 'Home Automation' project was supported by legendary playwright Edward Albee and his foundation in New York.

Paradoxically, the de-fense department had helped create a project that denounces the color code threat alert system. The department of de-fense had supported the call for peace.

The Home-land Secu-rity Depart-ment's color code threat alert system is an aggression against the beauty of color itself. Painters everywhere rise up! All artists rise up! We can create ART AGAINST FEAR.

While we understand that our leaders need a system of communication, we contest its experiment on the civillian population. We simply have no use for the color codes other than as an object of our fears. Roughly FORTY ARTISTS have collaborated on the 'Home Automation' project and they include :
